Cultivating Change: Stories from Ghana’s Organic Farmers

Kofi Kuma: Perseverance in Cashew Organic Farming

Kofi Kuma, a cashew farmer in Amoma, Ghana, has been cultivating organic cashew for over 15 years. Like many smallholders, he faced numerous challenges common to smallholder organic farmers, from pest control to soil fertility.

In order to strengthen his practices, Kofi participated in agricultural training sessions delivered through ECOM Ghana’s sustainability programmes. These covered a range of techniques tailored to organic farming, including composting, natural pest management, and improved harvesting methods.

Since applying these practices, Kofi has seen more consistent yields across his 12.5-acre farm. He expressed that the improved productivity has helped him better prepare for the future, support his family, and continue investing in his farming activities.

Kofi’s experience highlights the importance of access to practical, context-specific knowledge for smallholder farmers navigating the demands of organic production. At ECOM Ghana, we continue to support farmer-led improvements in agronomic performance, soil health, and income stability.

Felicia: Leadership in Organic Farming

Also in Amoma is Felicia, a cashew farmer and single mother of two who is contributing to a broader shift in women’s participation in agriculture.

After turning to farming as a means of supporting her family, Felicia faced challenges very similar to Kofi: limited resources, adverse growing conditions, and a lack of access to agronomic training.

In 2022, she took part in one of ECOM Ghana’s field schools, where she was introduced to climate-smart and organic farming practices. Since then, she has integrated several techniques in her farm, such as mulching, composting, and integrated pest management.

Felicia has expressed that these changes have helped her significantly reduce input costs, improve soil health, and increase the productivity of her cashew farm. Her produce is now certified organic, and she actively shares what she has learned with other women in her community.

“Farming has given me a voice,” she says. “I may not have gone to the university, but I’m building something that can support my children and inspire other women like me.”

Felicia’s story reflects the value of expanding access to practical, locally relevant training for women in agriculture. At ECOM Ghana, we are continuing to support inclusive learning and climate-resilient practices that enable farmers like Felicia to strengthen their livelihoods and lead positive change in their communities.
